Your labels are key elements of your brand and proper maintenance of your thermal printers will ensure your message is communicated consistently and clearly.
1. KEEP PRINTHEADS CLEAN
Clean your printhead every time you replace the ribbon or roll of labels. Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol applied to lint-free swabs or cloths will ensure residue build up is kept to a minimum.
2. CHECK THE RECOMMENDED HEAT AND DARKNESS SETTINGS
Check your printer’s manual to verify that you are operating within the appropriate heat settings. Running higher temps may reduce printhead life that negatively impacts your maintenance costs.
3. KEEP THE MEDIA SENSOR CLEAN
The media sensor keeps the space between the label and the printhead constant. Dust build up can cause printer malfunction. Use air dusters to keep this clean and do this during every roll change.
4. THE RIGHT RIBBONS MATTER
Only use quality thermal ribbons as wax build-up on platen rollers and assemblies may result in poor print clarity. Also, using slightly wider ribbons will help protect the printhead and increase its useful life.
5. USE GOOD QUALITY LABEL PAPER
Lower cost paper labels are generally uncoated materials that have a rougher “grain” that leads to increased wear and tear on your printheads. Look for coated papers that are not as abrasive and offer higher quality print.
